What is the Internet....
The internet is a product of the early 1960's. It is a vast network that electronically connects millions of computers including yours. No one owns it. No one controls it. Initially, the U.S. Department of Defense and several universities established networks for research purposes. As technology developed, more and more private companies got involved. By 1989, the World Wide Web came in to being as communcations and technologies were improved. This essentially made it possible for the average person to access the World Wide Web though, by today's standards, it was crude and did require some technical abilities initially.
Contrary to what some would have you believe, Al Gore and nothing to do with creating the internet or the world wide web.
Seperate yet parallel to the development of the internet, was the development of personal computers. Several companies including Osborne and Radio Shack developed computers for personal use. Finally, in 1982, IBM released their version of hte Personal Computer. Note IBM did not invent the personal computer but they did make it a household word.
